A HEPA filter system is required to meet the governmental standards set forth to ensure numerous aspects of high quality filtration. The requirements for this particular air filter were set in place to expressly determine the definition. Advertisers can not claim they have this type of filter if it does not meet the requirements.
Any HEPA filter system is required to remove 99.97% of all airborne particulates that are 0.3 micrometers or larger. The filter is made by using fibers that are laid in random patterns to create the smallest of openings. The naked eye can not see the openings as they are only to allow the flow of air versus the flow of particles in the air pass through.
The way that the system works is a bit unlike most filters. A HEPA filter system does not simply have a layer of fibers with pores that can allow the passage or particles. Each layer is designed to interact with the previous layer. If there are particles that make it pass the first layer of the filter the second layer catches them, and so forth. This creates a very thorough filtration system that will trap a lot more of the airborne pollutants than charcoal or membrane filtration systems. Read more
